Meet Food Block Buddy: A New Way to Talk About Food Groups This National Nutrition Month

Have you ever looked at your child’s plate and thought:

Why is everything brown? How do I explain food groups without turning dinner into a lecture? Is there a way to encourage variety without starting a food battle?

You’re not alone.

At Family Meal Project, we believe family meals are about connection first and nutrition grows from there. That’s why, in honor of National Nutrition Month®, we’re introducing a new friend to help make those conversations easier (and a lot more fun).

Meet Food Block Buddy

Food Block Buddy is a playful little builder who believes strong things are built piece by piece, including plates. Instead of labeling foods as “good” or “bad,” Buddy focuses on one simple idea: What can we add to make this plate stronger? Through color, curiosity, and a bit of imagination, Food Block Buddy helps children explore:

  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Grains
  • Protein foods
  • Dairy (and fortified alternatives)

He gives families a shared language, one that feels encouraging, not pressuring. Because when kids feel ownership, they feel empowered.

How to Use Food Block Buddy at Your Family Table

You don’t need a formal lesson plan. Try one of these simple strategies this week:

🍽 Build Together

At dinner, ask:

  • What colors do we see?
  • Do we have foods that help us grow?
  • What could we add?

🛒 Try the Builder Challenge

At the grocery store, invite your child to help choose:

  • One fruit
  • One vegetable
  • One grain
  • One protein
  • One dairy food

🎨 Add One Color

If a meal feels repetitive, ask:
“What color could we add?

This National Nutrition Month, Focus on Addition — Not Restriction

At Family Meal Project, we know that confident eaters aren’t built overnight. They’re built through:

  • Repeated exposure
  • Positive modeling
  • Low-pressure opportunities
  • Shared family meals

Food Block Buddy is here to support that process, one colorful plate at a time.
